Local and regional transportation networks are the foundation for the GTA’s newest socially, culturally and economically vibrant downtown.
CITY OF MARKHAM -- For many Ontario communities the frustration of traffic congestion and overall lack of transit services lie at the heart of both economic and social growth challenges. For The Remington Group’s newly planned urban community Downtown Markham, transportation was a primary consideration in the development of one of North America’s largest LEED certified mixed-use communities.
As a strategically designed area and designated Mobility Hub, Downtown Markham incorporates integrated transit through Viva rapid transit and Metrolinx, which offers both residents and commuters unmatched options for fast, reliable and efficient transportation.
“For Downtown Markham the use of transit marks our commitment to the environment. The community continues to be an industry leader in environmentally responsible design and development. The delivery of a variety of transit options complements this vision,” said Christopher Bratty, President of Land Development and Investments, The Remington Group.
A successful mobility hub such as the one that will be at the heart of Downtown Markham, is a place where integrated urban design, environmental sustainability, land use and transportation planning work seamlessly to create a vibrant city centre with healthy transportation, city building, and place making objectives.
Mobility hubs and resulting integrated transit are intended to provide travelers with seamless access to all modes of transportation and demonstrate excellence in architectural design. This is exemplified by the artistic form of the dedicated Viva rapid way at the gateway to Downtown Markham.
“The first leg of the dedicated Viva rapid transit line was completed in 2010. Viva bus services currently operate various lines through Downtown Markham,” says Dale Albers, Chief Communications Officer for York Region Rapid Transit Corporation. “Viva customers travelling along Highway 7 can also make their ride seamless with convenient connections in Markham, with GO Transit commuter rail and express buses, YRT local bus services, and the future 407 transitway.”
Downtown Markham recognizes that in order to attract and sustain retail, commercial and residential densities within the community, the establishment of transit is paramount.
For guests travelling to Downtown Markham from out of town, GO Transit connects from Toronto’s Union Station. The location of Downtown Markham also sits on Ontario’s most used roads Highway 407 and Highway 404.
Integrated transportation within Downtown Markham also means that residents have a variety of custom trails for walking, biking and running. Working with third party agencies as well as the Provincial government, Downtown Markham has created a community that is transit friendly and green.
Markham is the corporate campus hub of Ontario with 900 High Tech and Life Sciences companies. In 2010, there were roughly 127,625 daytime employees commuting to the city. GO Transit’s Unionville Station is in the heart of Downtown Markham and an integral mode of commuting for those coming into or out of Markham.
