MARKHAM, ONT. — Downtown Markham’s incredible story continues. The Remington Group broke ground on its new dynamic retail component on Enterprise Boulevard.
“I’d like to welcome all of you personally because this is what we believe is the greatest development story in North America,” Christopher Bratty, President, Land Development and Investments, The Remington Group, told an enthusiastic crowd that included Town of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti and other local dignitaries.
“Now we have the continuation of that dream with the groundbreaking of the retail component. Downtown Markham keeps progressing, keeps delivering and keeps exceeding expectations.”
At build out the impressive 2 million-plus square-foot retail will include the recently announced Cineplex Odeon Downtown Markham and VIP Cinemas — 62,000 square-foot theatre and entertainment destination. In addition to entertainment, there will be restaurants and high-end retail stores but also 3.4 million square feet of office space, including National Headquarters for Motorola and Honeywell.
“This is an exciting day,” said Mayor Scarpitti, who was thrilled by the prospect of what the retail component would mean for residents but also for the Town of Markham in terms of attracting visitors from across the GTA and beyond. “I think this is going to set a benchmark for offices, for retail and the way they’re designed and integrated within communities.”
The goal of Downtown Markham — the largest LEED-certified, mixed-use development in North America — is to bring residential, retail and commercial activities together, meshing seamlessly with art galleries, parks, squares and other amenities to create a place to come to but also a place to come back to.
When completed, the community will be home to 9,500 people with 16,000 working right in the core of Downtown Markham’s leading-edge commercial ventures.
